Any new noise from your car can cause worry, but brake noise can be the most alarming. Brake squeak is probably the most frequent brake concern we see at the shop. A brake squeak can be caused by any number of issues, some more dangerous than others.

Did you know that some brake pads are designed to squeak? Manufacturers often build in ‘wear indicators’ or ‘squealers’ to the brake pads. These metal tabs are there to squeal when they contact the brake rotor. So when your pads wear to manufacturers’ limits, you have an audible warning.

Living in the pacific northwest, moisture also comes into play. It is not uncommon for a thin layer of rust to build up on the brake components, causing noise. This brake squeak will generally go away after the first few stops and is no cause for concern. Part of living in our beautiful area.

Driving on dirt or gravel roads can also cause brake noise over time. Dust and dirt will build up on the brake components causing brake noises. This can also cause your brake parts to wear quicker, or unevenly.

At the end of the day though, any brake concern should be properly inspected by the professionals at Pape Automotive. When it comes to the safety of your family and your vehicle, you can never be too safe. Reach out to us today to schedule your appointment!
